Califone® Launches Security Packages Helps Schools meet No Child Left Behind Requirements.

Califone International, Inc, the premier manufacturer of quality sound presentation solutions for schools has launched two new security packages.

“Each of the security products was chosen to help wide-ranging institutions address different safety-related measures,” shared company Marketing Director Tim Ridgway. “The kits were designed to help schools meet the security requirements included within No Child Left Behind Legislation, which mandates schools offer secure, safe learning environments for their students.”

Both packages share two of their three components, with the difference being the two-way radios used in each. The PA-15 portable megaphone is constructed of a durable ABS plastic so it can be used in any inclement weather. It’s powerful enough to be heard from 1000’ away and comes with an emergency siren. The second component is the 1001A Security Wand, an easy to read, handheld metal detector with an LED display, high/low sensitivity switch and comes with a headphone jack for silent screening.

The first Emergency Response Kit (#ERK-1000) is suited for open areas with its two Keep-In-Touch (KIT) FRS-18 radios. Backlit, with a large, easy-to-read LCD display, the KIT radios pack 14 channels with 38 sub-codes and a “transmit and receive” indicator. The smaller and lighter radios come with a convenient hands-free package and use three readily replaceable “AAA” batteries (included).

The second Emergency Response Kit (#ERK-2000) was optimized for urban use because of the packages’ chosen radio. The ControlCom Radio utilizes UHF radio waves, which tend to reflect better than VHF, allowing them to bounce around corners, between structures and to work more effectively inside steel and concrete buildings. The ControlCom Radios can be effectively used in up to eight-story buildings. Each ControlCom has two programmable frequencies with an automatic squelch control to eliminate static noise during reception. The two Watt units include an internal condenser microphone and a Push to Talk (PTT) feature and have a two mile line of site range. They come with an antenna, battery pack, metal belt clip, leatherette holster, wall charger and a 9.6 volt rechargeable nickel metal hydride battery which can hold its charge for 8-13 hours. Additional radios can be purchased individually.

Introducing the Security Packages comes at a time when schools are improving their security, developing and implementing safe school plans and stepping up violence prevention programs. Support from the federal level has also increased to provide school leaders with more information about emergency preparedness. U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige recently unveiled a new section on the U.S. Department of Education’s Web site (www.ed.gov/emergencyplan) designed to be a one-stop source to help school officials plan for any emergency, including natural disasters, violent incidents and terrorist acts.

“As a former superintendent of the nation’s seventh largest school district, I know the importance of emergency planning,” Secretary Paige said. “The midst of a crisis is not the time to start figuring out who ought to do what. At that moment, everyone involved—from top to bottom—should know the drill and know each other.”

In addition to the web site, Paige also announced that $30 million is available in FY 2003 to help school districts improve and strengthen emergency response and crisis management plans. Funds could be used for a number of purposes including the purchasing of equipment. An additional $30 million is included in the proposed FY 2004 budget.

Paige added that under the No Child Left Behind Act, local school districts must provide assurances that they have plans that outline how they are working to keep their schools safe and drug free.
