Califone Unveils First iPad Jackbox to Support Mobile-Based Learning Activities in Classrooms and Libraries
As educators continue to expand mobile-based learning activities in the classroom, the need for distributed audio to select students through connected headphones has grown. To meet this demand, Califone International, Inc. has launched the first jackbox for iPads, iPhones and iPods.
The new six-position jackbox (1206i) enables up to six students to listen to lesson content at the same time without disrupting others. This privacy feature makes the jackbox an extremely flexible tool, able to facilitate differentiated learning, literacy exercises, read-alongs and language learning applications cite just a few examples of audio-based activities in today’s classrooms.
The 1206i Jackbox also allows teachers to maximize the use of existing classroom technology to captivate and motivate students. It distributes headphone audio through standard 3.5 mm plugs, accommodating up to six students at a time. Master volume controls tailor the sound for all connected headphones.
In a 2012 survey conducted by Califone, 76.5 percent of educators reported that four or more students are grouped together in computer-based learning centers during classroom lessons. Grouping by interest, ability, learning style or other common factor enables students to learn at a pace that works best for their individual needs, and to master new content and skills. The 1206i Jackbox helps students take full advantage of the growing number of downloadable apps and achieve mastery through shared learning.
“The 1206i Jackbox is the first of its kind for mobile-based group learning activities,” said Tim Ridgway, vice president of marketing for Califone. “Teachers can easily connect their iPad, iPhone or iPod with the Jackbox to engage a group of students in a read-along, literacy or STEM applications. The jackbox helps educators effectively incorporate digital learning activities into the classroom, leading students to comprehend and master difficult content.”
The jackbox is compatible with all 30-pin iPad, iPhone, and iPod models for sitting in the cradle of the docking station (iPad 1-3 models, iPhone models through the 4S and up to 3rd generation iPod models). All current models (iPad4, iPhone5 as well as fourth and fifth generation iPods) can be used with a separate Lightning® connection (not included).
When connected to power through its Y-cord, the 1206i also functions as an iPad/iPhone/iPod docking station. Plans are underway to consider an Android version. The jackbox is built with rugged ABS plastic for added durability in the classroom. It’s available individually and as a 6-position Listening Center with six 3068AV headphones.
The 1206i will be introduced at the Infocomm 2013 show in Orlando ( 6/12-14) and ISTE 2013 in San Antonio (6/24-26).
